Cureus and compassio lay the foundation stone for the Peine senior residence

Hamburg/Ulm/Peine, 30 September 2026. Cureus, an integrated property company that specialises in developing and actively managing its own inpatient care home portfolio, laid the cornerstone for the Peine senior residence today together with the future operator, compassio. The ceremony took place in the presence of City Planning Director Florian Hahn. Also present were representatives of the parties involved in the construction, city officials, the operator, the developer, and neighbors. In addition to the main ceremony—which included the ceremonial burial of a time capsule filled with items such as a daily newspaper, coins, and construction documents—the approximately 25 attendees were provided with detailed information about the new senior living facility and given a first look at the construction site. Refreshments were plentiful. MBN GmbH is serving as the general contractor for this project. The new building is being constructed at Schützenstr. 17 and Kleine Schützenstr. 2 in 31224 Peine (Lower Saxony).

ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

Uwe Poganiatz-Heine, project manager for the developer Cureus, on the project: Exactly one year ago, this site was still home to a aging complex of postal buildings that had been unused for a long time. At the end of 2025, we began the extensive demolition work and subsequently prepared the construction site—including archaeological surveys, earthworks, and structural soil improvement—ensuring it was ready for the building construction work by summer. Our general contractor, MBN, has begun work with the first subcontractors. As part of the foundation work, and in keeping with tradition, we’d like to lay the cornerstone today and wish everyone involved in the project every success as we move forward. From now on, the new senior residence will rise step by step, take shape, and then—as planned—be handed over at the beginning of 2028, ready for operation, to our operating partner compassio, whom we’ve secured for this location.”

The compassio Seniorenresidenz Peine is being built in a L-shape with five full stories on a plot of approximately 4,630 square meters in a well-established location in the center of Peine and is expected to have a gross floor area of approximately 8,800 square meters. The sustainably designed building is being constructed as an energy-optimized KfW Efficiency House in accordance with the KNN-WG55 program. A rooftop photovoltaic system and a district heating connection support the building’s operations in an environmentally responsible manner. The façade design, coordinated with the city, blends well into the surroundings. The planned green spaces on the senior living facility’s grounds—which, in accordance with the city’s vision, will be connected to the surrounding green corridors—will also contribute to enhancing the town’s appearance. Parts of the outdoor facilities will then be available as public green spaces for the residents and visitors of Peine.

LIVING AND WORKING AT THE SENIOR RESIDENCE

Long-Term Care Beds and Assisted Living in One Location

The Peine senior residence will offer 124 long-term care beds in single rooms, 30 of which are wheelchair-accessible. All rooms feature a private bathroom as well as connections for telephone, internet, and television. The range of services includes long-term care and short-term care and is designed for people who need support and care in their daily lives.
In addition, 24 units for assisted living are being built. The 1- to 3-room apartments range in size from 28 to 70 square meters and are designed for seniors who wish to live as independently as possible while still having access to support when needed. A basic range of services—including reception and visitor services as well as regular check-ins—provides additional security and reliability in daily life. Additional services, such as nursing care or housekeeping assistance, can be booked individually.

The residential wing will feature welcoming, bright living and common areas that provide space for socializing and interaction. Residents can decorate their rooms with personal items and their own furniture, creating a personalized and familiar living environment. The senior residence’s amenities include a restaurant with a terrace, a fireplace lounge with a library, and a hair salon.

“The new senior residence will be a place that brings together various housing and care needs for the elderly in a single location,” says Dr. Florian Frensch, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the compassio Group. “This will allow us to provide additional services for older adults in Peine.”

Energy-Efficient New Construction

The building is being constructed to the KfW-55-KNN WG standard and thus meets high energy-efficiency requirements. Modern building systems help reduce energy consumption over the long term and enable energy-efficient operation. Residents also benefit from this, for example, through a comfortable indoor climate.

More Than 80 New Jobs

The new facility will create more than 80 jobs in the areas of nursing, care, administration, and services. The team will begin to take shape during the construction phase.

“We’re starting the recruitment process early so that we’re well-positioned for the launch,” says Julia Glöggler, Ramp-Up Manager at the compassio Group.
