Hamburg/Ulm/Korbach, 26. June 2026. Cureus, an integrated property company that specialises in developing and actively managing its own inpatient care home portfolio, laid the foundation stone for the Wohncarrées Korbach today together with the future operator, compassio. The ceremony took place in the presence of Mayor Stefan Kieweg and Karl-Friedrich Frese, First Deputy District Administrator and Head of the Building Department for the Waldeck-Frankenberg district. Also present were representatives of the parties involved in the construction, from the local authority, as well as from the operator and the developer, and neighbours. In addition to the actual ceremony, which included the ceremonial burial of a time capsule filled with items such as a daily newspaper, coins and construction documents, the approx. 30 participants were also provided with detailed information about the new care home and given a first glimpse of the construction site. Refreshments were provided in abundance. Cureus is acting as the general contractor for the construction of this project. The new building is being constructed at Poststr. 1 and 3 in 34497 Korbach (Hesse).

Uwe Poganiatz-Heine, project manager of Cureus, on the project: “In 2025, we were able to begin the extensive clearance of the site and the demolition of the old buildings on the former post office grounds. The subsequent earthworks and drainage works have progressed rapidly according to plan. And the structural contractor was able to start work in a stable excavation pit at the end of May. We are now laying the foundation stone in accordance with tradition as part of the foundation works. At the same time, work is also commencing on the building for assisted living, so that the entire residential complex will gradually take shape from now on. And we are optimistic that we will be able to hand over both buildings, ready for operation as planned, to our operator partner compassio – whom we have secured for this site – by the end of 2027. We wish everyone involved in the construction continued success.”

Johannes Knake, Managing Director of the operator compassio, is also enthusiastic: “We foresee a growing demand for care places in Korbach and the surrounding area in the future, and we are delighted about this new facility, which we will also be giving a fitting new name that reflects the region. Thanks to our extensive experience in running care and residential facilities for the elderly, we can already promise our future residents high-quality care and, for the future care staff at this site, modern workplaces and a supportive working atmosphere. At Wohncarrée Korbach, we will offer full-time care places, short-term care places and assisted living. In all of this, we place great emphasis on individual social and therapeutic care in our facilities,” Knake continued.

Modern care with a comprehensive range of services at the senior residence

The compassio senior residence in the Wohncarrée Korbach is being built on the eastern half of a plot of approx. 6,500 square metres in a well-established location in the centre of Korbach and is set to cover a gross floor area of approx. 6,430 square metres. The U-shaped building opens to the south onto a green courtyard and will have a partial basement. The sustainably designed building is being constructed as an energy-optimised KfW-KNN Efficiency House 55. A photovoltaic system on the roof and a heat pump for heating and hot water production support the building’s operation in an environmentally sound manner. The flat roofs will be covered with gravel and partially greened.

The barrier-free care home spans two full storeys and a staggered storey. For future residents, 119 modern care places will be available in generously proportioned single rooms with en-suite bathrooms. 39 of the rooms are wheelchair-accessible, whilst some rooms are more spacious as ‘comfort rooms’. In addition to a nurse call system, each room has its own telephone, television and internet connection. Residents may furnish their rooms themselves to maintain privacy and create a private retreat. To foster a family-like, social atmosphere, the rooms are organised into six independent living groups, each with its own kitchen-diner, lounge area and balcony.

On the ground floor of the senior residence, a hotel-style reception area with an inviting foyer, a residents' restaurant with a kitchen and sun terrace, a lounge with a fireplace and a library, and a hairdresser’s are currently under construction. A modern care bathroom and therapy rooms complete the range of services available to residents.

Barrier-free living in the second construction phase

On the western side of the site, 31 modern, accessible assisted living flats will be built in a separate building, four of which will be suitable for wheelchair users. The plan is for an L-shaped building with two full storeys and a stepped storey. Here too, the flat roofs will be greened.

The two-bedroom flats, ranging in size from 43 to 67 square metres, are spread across a gross floor area of approx. 2,380 square metres. Each flat comprises a living room with a kitchenette, a bedroom, a shower room, a storage room and a hallway, as well as a terrace or balcony. The floors are connected by a lift, and a storage room for mobility aids is available on the ground floor. The rental terms, as well as the services included and the corresponding fees, will be announced at a later date.

Excellent location and accessibility

Situated adjacent to the green corridor surrounding the town centre and Korbach’s old ramparts, the location is central. The lively centre of the Hanseatic town, with its local shops, social and cultural facilities, as well as churches and doctors’ surgeries, is just a few minutes’ walk away. Good links to public transport are also guaranteed, ensuring excellent accessibility for residents, visitors and staff alike.

The attractively designed outdoor areas also invite all residents of the Wohncarrée Korbach to enjoy outdoor activities and socialise, whilst harmoniously connecting the two buildings on the site. In addition, there are a total of around 31 car parking spaces with pre-installation for electric vehicles, five of which are accessible for disabled users, as well as around 20 bicycle parking spaces.

Well thought out standard ensures individuality and highest building quality

The Wohncarrée Korbach is designed and will be build in accordance with the Cureus standard for system care homes. This places great importance on uniform, high quality standards and is oriented, among other things, towards the requirements of the operators, focusing on the residents and care staff. In this way, the structural processes and all properties are optimised from the inside to the outside: This concerns, for example, the size and arrangement of rooms to optimize space and walkways. Cureus care homes are also designed and equipped for maximum utility: interior corridors benefit from as much daylight as possible, every room has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide attractive views of the surrounding area, and the modern bathrooms and window fronts always follow the same standardised system approach. Each complex’s architecture and facade incorporate individual touches and are constructed to the highest quality standards, integrating seamlessly into their surroundings. The Cureus system approach also prioritises sustainability, both in terms of a care home’s long-term economic viability and its impact on the environment. All Cureus care homes are, for example, constructed in accordance with the ‘Effizienhaus-40-Standard’, while the bulk procurement of floor coverings or elevator systems, for example, ensures cost synergies and long-term maintenance contracts covering several properties also reduce costs for care home operators. The constant review and optimisation of the Cureus system care home standard guarantees the construction of care homes that truly meet demand.
