Hamburg/Berlin/Aschendorf, 16 December 2025. Cureus, an integrated property company that specialises in developing and actively managing its own care home portfolio, has completed the DOREAFAMILIE Aschendorf facility at Hüntestraße 5 in 26871 Aschendorf, a district of Papenburg (Lower Saxony), ahead of schedule and handed it over to its operating partner DOREAFAMILIE. Cureus acted as the general contractor for this project.
“We are delighted to have expanded the urgently needed care capacity for residents of Papenburg and the surrounding area in just around a year of construction, using state-of-the-art standards and attractive architecture,” says Kevin Lleshi, project manager at Cureus. “This has significantly enhanced the already established care facility. Even more people in need of care will now find a place to live where they can feel at home. We wish the future residents and the team at DOREAFAMILIE Aschendorf all the best. A big thank you goes to everyone involved in the construction,” Lleshi continues.
Dr Walter von Horstig, Managing Director of DOREAFAMILIE, is delighted with the successful completion of the work: "I am thrilled. The extension also has modern facilities that offer all the possibilities of contemporary, well-founded nursing care. This has enabled us to successfully expand the family-like and lively community that we have built up together with our residents and our team on site in a cosy setting. The outdoor facilities, communal and therapy rooms, and comfortable seating areas now also invite the new residents to socialise, but also offer places of retreat when needed."

Sustainable care facility with a focus on the well-being of residents
Until now, the only building on the approx. 5,850 square metre site was the existing modern nursing home with 71 spacious single rooms for inpatient care and four residential units. There are a total of five family-style residential groups on three floors. Each of the residential areas has twelve cosy single rooms and one large apartment; which is intended as a double room for married couples. A large, bright and cosy kitchen-diner serves as the social hub and meeting place in each residential group. Directly adjacent to the hotel-style foyer on the ground floor is the residents' restaurant with a sun terrace and its own fresh food kitchen. Hairdressing and pedicure services as well as doctors and therapists are also regularly available in-house.
The extension now complements the L-shaped main building to the south. It has two full storeys and a staggered storey and covers approx. 2,440 square metres of gross floor space. The extension follows the typical Cureus system approach. A striking feature is the linear façade, which blends in with the colour of the surrounding buildings, and floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. The extension was built in accordance with the KfW 40NH standard and is supplied with heat and electricity by its own combined heat and power plant. The building is also aiming for certification according to the extremely sustainable DGNB Silver standard. Spacious nursing bathrooms and additional staff and administrative rooms complement the existing facilities at the location. The new part of the building also features exclusively spacious single rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Each of the 48 rooms has a telephone, television and internet connection as well as a nurse call system. Residents are welcome to furnish the rooms themselves, which can make the transition to a new phase of life easier. To promote a family-like, social atmosphere, the newly built rooms are divided into three additional, independently organised residential groups with their own kitchen-diner and lounge area as well as a balcony or terrace.
Lots of greenery and good transport links
The DOREAFAMILIE Aschendorf care home was built on the site of a former Franciscan monastery on a small stream. The complex, directly adjacent to the monastery garden, is located on the outskirts of the former district town, which now belongs to Papenburg; the town centre is within walking distance. The green surroundings and several shopping facilities, nearby social institutions and doctors' surgeries make the location attractive. The bus stops near the building and there are parking spaces for cars and bicycles on the premises, which makes it easy for employees and visitors to get there.
Building in accordance with high-quality, individual standard
The DOREAFAMILIE Aschendorf extension has been designed and was built in accordance with the Cureus standard for system care homes. This places great importance on uniform, high quality standards and is oriented, among other things, towards the requirements of the operators, focusing on the residents and care staff. In this way, the structural processes and all properties are optimised from the inside to the outside: This concerns, for example, the size and arrangement of rooms to optimize space and walkways. Cureus care homes are also designed and equipped for maximum utility: interior corridors benefit from as much daylight as possible, every room has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide attractive views of the surrounding area, and the modern bathrooms and window fronts always follow the same standardised system approach. Each complex’s architecture and facade incorporate individual touches and are constructed to the highest quality standards, integrating seamlessly into their surroundings. The Cureus system approach also prioritises sustainability, both in terms of a care home’s long-term economic viability and its impact on the environment. All Cureus care homes are, for example, constructed in accordance with the ‘Effizienhaus-40-Standard’, while the bulk procurement of floor coverings or elevator systems, for example, ensures cost synergies and long-term maintenance contracts covering several properties also reduce costs for care home operators. The constant review and optimisation of the Cureus system care home standard guarantees the construction of care homes that truly meet demand.
